Presentation of the TIRAMISU project in the European Space Expo in Brussels

Brussels hosted the European Space Expo from 26th September until 11th October 2012 with more than 16,000 visitors. During the Expo, experts in the Space, environment, agriculture and many other sectors, presented to the general public the many ways in which the GMES (Global Monitoring for Environment and Security) and Galileo programmes are already bringing benefits to EU citizens.

The technical coordinator of the TIRAMISU (Toolbox Implementation for Removal of Anti-personnel Mines, Submunitions and Uxo) project, the Dr.Vinciane Lacroix of the Royal Military Academy, presented to the audience the direct impact of GMES in the Security of Europe and its citizens.

Moreover, the audience was introduced to how the Global monitoring plays a crucial role in the development of the TIRAMISU project (co-funded by the Seventh Framework Programme of the European Commission). The representative of the TIRAMISU project also presented the current tools in development:

-Demining planning tools, which will help locating the threats and define the contaminated areas;

-Detection and disposal tools, which will physically neutralise mines and UXOs and improve operator’s safety;

-Training and mine risk education tools.

The European Space Expo

The European Space Expo has been launched by the European Commission to show how Space and its applications provide benefits to Europe’s citizens. The Expo highlights the critical role of the European Union in Space and Space-based technologies.
